Lathe Cut Rings are instantly recognizable for their square (sometimes rectangular) cross-section profile. For that reason, they’re sometimes referred to as “Square” Rings or even “Washers.”
The difference between lathe cut rings and other square rings and washers is how they’re manufactured. Washers and square rings are typically molded or die-cut. The manufacturing process for lathe cut rings begins with melt-extruding the rubber compound into the form of a tube. The inside and outside diameters—and resulting wall thickness—are tightly controlled. Once cooled, the rubber tubes are pulled over a spinning mandrel, and then lathe cut to their finished dimensions.
Lathe cut rings perform as well or better than O-rings in static, higher pressure applications, and may offer some cost-savings depending on the material, size, and quantity. They are interchangeable with O-ring sizes on the AS568 Standard and fit in the same groove.
Lathe cut rings are available in most of the same compound materials as O-rings and other seals. Reach out to Rothkopf to see if a lathe cut ring is the right part in your application.
